Entrepreneurship is largely about trusting ideas, finding funding, and building a team to pursue a goal. But these are mechanistic descriptors of the process. There are two aspects of entrepreneurship that are especially intriguing from a psychological viewpoint —
- ‘creative destruction’, which occurs when we destroy old ways of thinking in order to create new ones[the structures of which the Entrepreneur or Futurist often has little or no access to, initially].
- entrepreneurs often ‘build’ before they have confirmed access to the resources needed.
By necessity, an entrepreneur must be comfortable with ambiguous information and uncertain outcomes. In doing so, we tend to ‘trust the gut’ or our ‘intuition’. This instinctive response is often described as sense of ‘knowing’, or ‘it just feels right’. However, to cope with uncertainty, many entrepreneurs unknowingly have bias towards an illusion of control — this perception of small risk often helps with belief in the project, but makes for enormous potential for disaster.
People talk of ‘flow’ states when performing at their best — but to deal with uncertainty with maximal positive effect, one must also be creative when it is difficult to do so. It requires the development of fresh thinking through imagination, intuition, re-framing and exploring different perspectives. To be both successful and continuously progressive, we need to learn to be comfortable with uncertainty, ambiguity and paradox. This provides a foundation for creativity, entrepreneurship and agility.
